C.R. 57' Corridor Coach Kits

57' 8 wheel corridor stock built 1921-23.

These coaches represent the final era of Caledonian coach design. With a full ellipical roof and, in the later examples, an angle-trussed underframe they were in many respects similar to contemporary coaches built by the MR and LNWR with whom they were soon to merge (with others) to form the London Midland and Scottish Railway. Built by outside contractors none of this stock was fitted with vacuum brake when built and so were confined to being hauled by Westinghouse fitted C.R. locomotives until about 1933 when all were fitted with vacuum equipment. After this they spread to all parts of the L.M.S. system in Scotland and were not unknown south of the border.

Examples of all types lasted well into B.R. days but sadly by then the bodywork had often been marred by repairs using tongue and groove boarding. On a more happy note an example of each of Diagrams 124 and 111A (CC3 & 8) survive, preserved by the S.R.P.S. at Bo'ness, Scotland.

Caledonian Railway Coat of Arms

"Wha dare meddle wi' me" - a loose translation of the Scottish motto (nemo me impune lacessit, litterly meaning "no-one provokes me with impunity") which was appropriated along with the Scottish coat of arms (without any sanction from the Lord Lyon, King of Arms) by the Caledonian Railway Co.
